Water fell from the cracks drop by drop. The people looked up at the sky and said, “rain”. The moment they said “rain” the drops stopped falling and the clouds moved onward. After such a false rain, the heat was more oppressive than before. Finally, the people stopped looking up at the sky because they could not bear the expectation. It was autumn, and the expectation stood in the air like the heat of August, like the cold of January. And where the expectation stood there was neither heat nor cold, only hope, which is always at room temperature. And when the expectation and the hope began to rot, like pumpkins forgotten in the field for too long, when the people said that there wouldn’t be any rain this year, and didn’t even look up with a defiant expression of “I dare you” when the sky became superfluous, simply superfluous—that’s when the rain fell and filled the land. And after the rain came the flowers, slowly, hesitantly, having been crushed enough by the burden of corpses the previous spring. And corpses fell on them this time too, first many, then fewer, until one morning the war ended exactly as it had begun, the corpses rotted on the ground and flowers were picked and placed on the corpses. Then Avraham Mandelbaum returned home and found his wife hanging in the butcher’s shop.
